Joseph L. Giacalone is a retired NYPD Sergeant SDS (Supervisor Detective Squad) and a widely respected expert in criminal investigations and cold cases. With more than two decades of experience in law enforcement, Joseph has earned a national and international reputation for his leadership in solving complex cases and training the next generation of investigators.

Throughout his distinguished career in the New York Police Department, Joseph held several high-level positions, including Commanding Officer of the Bronx Cold Case Squad. He has supervised and investigated hundreds of serious incidents involving homicides, violent crimes, suicides, and missing persons. His deep understanding of investigative strategy led to his 2023 selection to join the Osage County, Oklahoma BTK Serial Killer Task Force—a team dedicated to one of the most chilling serial murder cases in U.S. history.

Joseph's dedication to criminal justice extends beyond active duty. He has trained law enforcement officers across the United States and around the world. In 2013, he joined a specialized team in Amman, Jordan, to train detectives on investigating Intimate Partner Violence, a vital and often under-resourced area of police work. His reputation as an engaging and insightful speaker has made him a featured guest at major events such as CrimeCon, where he has presented in Nashville, Chicago, New Orleans, and Orlando.

As an author, Joseph has written two highly regarded books used widely in police departments and criminal justice programs: The Criminal Investigative Function: A Guide for New Investigators (4th Edition) and The Cold Case Handbook (2nd Edition), both published by Blue 360 Media. These resources are designed to provide actionable guidance for both new and experienced investigators and are often integrated into academic curriculums.

In addition to his work in the field, Joseph has served as an Adjunct Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 2005. He teaches courses in criminal investigation, cold case analysis, and other specialized topics, drawing directly from his professional experience. He also holds a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Crime and Deviance from John Jay College.

Joseph frequently appears in the media to provide expert commentary on criminal cases and investigative techniques. He is the host of “The Crime Report,” airing every Friday at 7 AM ET on Long Island News Radio WRCN 103.9 in Suffolk County, NY, where he discusses current cases, investigative trends, and public safety concerns.

Throughout his NYPD career, Joseph received multiple commendations for outstanding service, including the Department Medal of Valor. His work continues to impact how law enforcement professionals investigate crime, communicate with the public, and pursue justice.
